Adult literacy is a growing concern for our nation. Accelerated social, technological, and economic changes are creating a demand for greater skills. Within the past decade, the amount of available information has grown exponentially,requiring more advanced levels of comprehension, writing, problem solving, and critical thinking. Adults with limited skills have fewer opportunities for success. There is a widening gap between those who have skills to access, understand and communicate information and those who do not. Research shows that: Adults with limited literacy skills are more likely to live in poverty. One of the highest predictors of a child's success in school is the educational attainment of his or her parents. An adult without a high school diploma earns annually one-third as much as an adult with a four-year college degree.
